How to make a chalkboard tray

I originally got the idea for this from our wonderful friend The Little Wedding Helper. If you have a spare tray or photo frame lying around (and we had SO many trays left over from our wedding, which is why we went with this option) this is a great way to give it a new lease of life.

You will need

♥ An old tray / photo frame / surface
♥ Blackboard paint
♥ Chalk
♥ A paintbrush

Step one

Find a suitable tray or surface. Chalkboard paint will cover pretty much anything, but if you’re using a photo frame, remove the glass and cut a piece of thin MDF to size. Make sure the surface is clean and dry before you start.

Step two

Choose your outline for the chalkboard and cover it with tape. Make sure you get the shape right to avoid any annoying touch ups later.

Step three

Paint the blackboard paint onto the surface in horizontal stripes. Leave to dry for an hour and then paint in vertical stripes.

Step four

Wait 24 hours for the chalkboard paint to fully dry. This part is crucial as if you try to draw on it too soon, it will scrape off the paint. Once it’s fully dry, crush a small amount of chalk and rub it over the painted surface.

If you’re not keen on a heart shape, you can also cover the whole surface for a proper chalkboard look!

Inspired? Try this at home yourself and send us the results! We’d love to see what you come up with!
