Spring clean your make-up bag

It’s the time of year for a good old spring clean. Beautiful blossoms, tweeting birds and a sense of fresh starts are filling the air. But while we’re all too keen to de-clutter the house, many of us leave our make-up bags filled with stagnant, often germ-infested products that were best suited to the 80s.

Well, now you have no excuse to let your make-up bag fester and become irrelevant. We have our resident make-up correspondent Jules Cardozo-Marsh on hand to give us her top tips for spring cleaning your make-up bag.

Store your make up in style

First of all check out that make-up bag: has it seen better days? Have you EVER washed it? While you’re on a roll, now is the time to invest in a brand spanking new make-up bag. I LOVE nothing better than purchasing a crisp new make-up bag and filling it with brand new goodies. Bliss… So which bag lady are you?

Looking for something compact and portable? You need to buy the Ted Baker multicoloured cubic wash bag, £22. It’s great to fit into your handbag and has a pretty floral design – perfect for spring (and for Darling Lovely Life readers!).Ted Baker floral cubic make up bag £22Ted Baker floral cubic make up bag £22

Need a little more breathing room? Sewloma at notonthehighstreet.com has an amazing range of quirky make-up bags and I love the embroidered lipstick pouch in lemon. It’s a steal at £25 and will keep all your essentials safe. If you really fancy treating yourself, have your initials embroidered on for an extra £3.50. The whole range is simply gorgeous and I’m tempted to buy the lot!Sewloma make up pouch in lemon £25

And now for something really hefty and durable. You can fit the kitchen sink in this one! M&S always have great cosmetic bags that are brilliant for taking on holiday. Check out the Floral Collection Vintage inspired Weekender bag for just £15.Marks and Spencer floral weekend cosmetic bag - £15

While you’re transferring your products, grab the opportunity to wash those make-up brushes. Using a gentle baby shampoo, whoosh in warm water and rinse well.

Out with the old and in with this season’s look

Your make-up bag doesn’t need to look like a hoarder’s secret stash. Be brave and let go of those old, crusty products, shades that no longer suit and make up that should have been thrown away years ago. When are you ever going to wear it again? Once you’ve cleared out the clutter, it’s time to make way for some fabulous new products.

For me the key to a great look is the foundation: get that right and everything else will follow. Now that the weather is changing, it might be time for a slight change to your foundation colour if you’re sporting a new tan (if that’s possible in this weather) for spring? Two brands I simply can’t live without are Cosmetics à La Carte and Giorgio Armani, they simply are the best.

Spring is all about feeling fresh and nothing beats a curl of the lashes and a slick of the wand to get us feeling wide awake. However, mascara has a short shelf life and needs to be tossed away every three months to avoid the risk of bacteria building up. This gives you a great opportunity to play around with new brands, and if you’re due for a replacement, I love Benefit BAD gal lash mascara as it helps build up my sparse lashes and it feels like I have a set of false lashes on. This spring’s must-have products

Darling Lovely Life readers will be thrilled to learn that THE look of the season is pastels, so think soft purples, lilac and peach which are right on trend for your eyes this season. A sweep of colour works best if you simply cannot master a full on candy-store look. It’s all about brightening the face. Chanel and Bobbi Brown do amazing eye palettes and have some incredible pastel shades this season so check them out.

To add colour to the cheeks I love NARS blusher in Orgasm. It’s a best seller and suits the majority of skin tones for that erm… special glow!

Finally nothing says spring like a strong lip in a pretty colour. A lipstick really is an impulse purchase and we all feel SO much better when we have a new one to try – you know that amazing feeling, looking at a new lipstick bullet all ready to apply for a perfect pout? Try Tom Ford’s range as they are super hydrating and the colours are right on trend for spring. My favourite shade is True Coral which is great for a fresh spring look.Tom Ford lipstick in True Coral - £36

So, now that you have a fresh make-up bag and you’ve cleaned out your old products, you’re all ready for spring! Now go and enjoy a little retail therapy….
