My top five perfume ads

Usually I hate ads and prefer to potter around making tea until whatever I’m watching comes back on. But occasionally a perfume ad or short fashion film is so well shot, has such artistic integrity or is so wonderfully aspirational and exciting that whenever it comes on, I stop what I’m doing and watch. In no particular order, here are five of my favourite ad campaigns.

J’adore Dior starring Charlize Theron

I love Charlize Theron as the face of J’adore and in this fashion film, directed by Seven Years in Tibet’s Jean-Jacques Annaud, she’s mesmerising. Set at an opulent fashion show against a gorgeous gold backdrop, every second of the advert oozes glamour, not to mention the heart-stopping moment when Charlize whisks past models depicting glamorous silver screen icons like Marilyn Monroe and Grace Kelly and stomps onto the runway to the sound of Heavy Cross by Gossip.

Marilyn Monroe for Chanel No. 5 “what do you wear to bed?”

Genius! Bloody genius! I mean seriously, what better endorsement could a perfume have than from Marilyn Monroe, the queen of glamour, (even if it is from beyond the grave)? Enough said.

Nina L’Eau by Nina Ricci

I pretty much adore every Nina Ricci commercial in existence, but I chose this one because there’s something so captivating about the whole narrative. Alice through the looking glass, finding a secret magical perfume / potion, it all evokes the feeling of a high-fashion fairytale.

On the docks – Jean Paul Gaultier

Marrying his fragrances, Classique and Le Male, On the Docks has all the subtle sex appeal you could hope for. It’s immediately identifiable with Jean Paul Gaultier’s nautical stripes and classic corset silhouette motifs. Beautiful.

And last, but never least – Miss Dior Cherie directed by Sofia Coppola

Yes, it’s Dior again and it’s definitely, without question, my favourite ad of all time. Watching a beautiful, playful Maryna Linchuk skipping and cycling through a pastel-pretty Paris before floating away with a bunch of balloons in front of the Eiffel Tower – pure aspirational genius. Hardly surprising given the heavyweight direction of the legendary Sofia Coppola. This ad makes me smile every time I see it and makes me genuinely want to run out and buy Miss Dior Cherie before I’ve even smelled the stuff!
