There have been some sad life events over the last few weeks. My way of dealing with sadness is to pour everything into music – listening, singing, letting it out. And while I was processing things, it suddenly occurred to me that I was listening to a lot of love songs – must be all that wedding fever! We’ve chosen our first dance song (hint – it’s on this list) but I thought a little musical inspiration would be a wonderful way to start the week!
I’m not a big fan of slow, slushy love songs. PersonallyI’d find it a bit uncomfortable, maybe even overkill, to do the “staring lovingly into each other’s eyes while Boyzone plays” thing. So, in no particular order, it’s…
Under the Vintage Veil’s Top Ten Alternative First Dance Songs
Zero 7 – Somersault
This song represents everything magical about being around someone who makes you feel free and child-like again. To me it’s about a loss of inhibition, adult baggage and defensiveness which is an important part of any close relationship.
“You’re the prince to my ballerina,
You feed other people’s parking metres,
You encourage the eating of ice cream and
You would somersault in sand with me.”
The Moldy Peaches – Anyone Else But You
One for all the geek kids out there! This is cute, quirky and happy, a great way to celebrate the uniqueness of your relationship and how love comes in all forms, shapes, sizes… I hope you guys enjoy this!
“Here is the church and here is the steeple,
We sure are cute for two ugly people,
I don’t see what anyone could see
In anyone else but you.”
Barry Louis Polisar – All I Want Is You
I love this song just for its gorgeous simplicity – and the fact that it manages to be incredibly slushy without being slushy at all!
“If you were a wink, I’d be a nod
If you were a seed, well I’d be a pod.
If you were the floor, I’d wanna be the rug
And if you were a kiss, I know I’d be a hug”
Bloodhound Gang – The Bad Touch
This may be one to avoid if you have a very conservative family you don’t want to offend – but I always thought this would be a pretty amusing first dance song. I’d even avoid the temptation to choreograph a comedy dance to it, I’d just carry on dancing as if the lyrics are perfectly innocent. But that’s just me. (Or maybe I’ve just put this in here because I have hinted that my first dance song is on this list and I’m trying to freak my family out…)
“You and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals
So let’s do it like they do on the Discovery Channel”
Cat Power – Sea of Love (cover)
This beautiful, acoustic, ukulele cover of Sea of Love is one of the most moving songs you can dance to with someone you love. That is all.
“Do you remember when we met?
That’s the day I knew you were my pet
I want to tell you
How much I love you.”
The Pogues – Love you Till the End
Made even more famous by the very weepy “PS I Love You”, this is becoming an increasingly popular first dance song – it has that fab combination of a happy beat with earnest and emotionally charged lyrics
“I just want to be there when the morning light explodes
On your face it radiates
I can’t escape
I love you till the end.”
Hall & Oates – You Make My Dreams Come True
We’ve all had that feeling like in 500 Days of Summer where Tom imagines himself dancing down the street to this Hall & Oates song. It’s a happy song about how somebody makes you feel wonderful. And I like happy songs. And of course I had to share the clip from 500 Days of Summer. Because it’s cute (just forget you know the plot for a minute and focus on the feeling!)
“What I’ve got’s full stock of thoughts and dreams that scatter,
You pull them all together
And how I can’t explain,
But you – you make my dreams come true”
The Eels – My Beloved Monster and Me
Aaaaaw – don’t be put off by the fact that I sing this to my cat (crazy cat lady alert) this song is a very sweet way to let someone you love know how you feel about them!
“My beloved monster is tough,
If she wants she will disrobe you.
But if you lay her down for a kiss,
Her little heart it could explode.”
Cake – Love You Madly
A really great way to remind yourselves to enjoy your relationship and live in the moment. Marriage is also about keeping that spark alive – and this song tells you to do that every day!
“I don’t want to doubt you
Know everything about you
I don’t want to sit across the table from you
Wishing I could run.”
Zero 7 – Destiny
So I’m ending with a bit of slush – but with a naughty twist (listen to ALL of the lyrics). And I love Zero 7 – so they get two songs in my little chart. A great one for anyone who’s overcome a long-distance obstacle to be together.
“When I’m weak, I draw strength from you,
And when you’re lost, I know how to change your mood,
And when I’m down, you breathe life over me,
Even though we’re miles apart we’re each other’s destiny.”
What have you chosen as your first dance song and what does it say about you as a couple? Do you think a first dance song needs to be super romantic or does it just need to be relevant to you? I’d love to hear your thoughts!
